My FSD subscription ended last January, and this isn’t Tesla Autopilot. I installed a comma four in February, eight months of Level 2 ADAS I own outright in my Model Y. This is sunnypilot, an open source fork of @comma_ai's openpilot. No longer renting a closed system.
Sep 25, 2026
Last winter my @comma_ai four held a snow-packed Wisconsin hilltop road in my Tesla Model Y. This was before the chestnut eGPU, just a Snapdragon running a 48mb AI model. Hands ready, but never needed them. I send this when people ask how openpilot handles snow covered roads.
Sep 24, 2026
Rain and oncoming headlight glare at night smear video contrast. Thankfully @comma_ai uses an end-to-end AI model that reads the camera stream and outputs a path to drive, keeping my Tesla in line even when the image is messy. A rules stack needs clean lane line paint to steer.

Third place (@ExplodingCB and @kaileh57) restored navigate on openpilot. They showed an 8 km disengagement-free BeamNG demo, they're also spinning that work into a new openpilot fork called Turnpilot. ExplodingCB said stay tuned and provided this link.

EON Dashcam DevKit was a OnePlus phone in a custom windshield case. It ran a dashcam OS, Waze, and Spotify. The shop page said it was not designed to drive a car.

My comma four still runs on a 2018 Snapdragon. I’ve now strapped an RX 9060 eGPU into it on the Model Y to take the heavy 880M chestnut model compute. Welcome to the @comma_ai chestnut era.
Sep 14, 2026
… My @comma_ai four still does the part I actually care about with no app, subscription, or account required. It’s a one-time purchase to own, instead of renting indefinitely what you don't need.

Comma doesn't use your OBD-II port. That port is physically accessible to anyone in your car. Modern cars are starting to restrict OBD access because of this. @comma_ai has the harness plug directly into the ADAS camera behind the mirror instead. 🧵

Wisconsin white-tailed deer can run up to 40 mph. Not fast enough to dodge my @comma_ai dashcam footage. That is fast enough to narrowly avoid being struck by my Model Y and spike my adrenaline. comma Connect holds 3 days of dashcam footage for free, caught the whole thing.

Using @comma_ai's openpilot can mean two things depending on your car. On some cars, openpilot controls steering, speed, and braking. On others, openpilot steers while the vehicle's built-in adaptive cruise handles speed and braking. Very different feeling on the road. 🧵
Sep 6, 2026
… I've driven through several rainstorms since, including this 46 mile stretch on wet pavement with zero interventions. The vision model held the lane the whole way. @comma_ai's end to end stack has handled rain very well.
Sep 2, 2026
The @comma_ai Chestnut doesn't fix every turn. It does fix a lot of them currently. Stock comma four uses a Snapdragon 845. Add the GPU and it's smoother on the ones it does get right. Still improving.
Aug 29, 2026
Just found my lost pre-GPU comma four clip. This 58MB AI model on a 2018 snapdragon navigated this these barrels with very little input. I'm having a great time testing out the @comma_ai chestnut big model, more on those soon.

Headlights used to pull openpilot's path inside night curves. Your headlights always light the paint a few feet ahead. To the camera, that streak barely moves. In 2020 @comma_ai figured out how the car was moving by watching marks in the picture. At night those bright streaks on the paint looked like real marks and the software trusted them. …
Aug 16, 2026
I used to pay Tesla for turns like this. If @comma_ai can do this with a 2018 phone chip, imagine what they can do with a desktop GPU attached to it. Chestnut [Ready To Drive] eGPU kit is still on order.
Aug 9, 2026
The road crew left cones creeping across my lane, my comma four planned around them. No sensor on my @comma_ai four flags a cone and says move over. It's not reading a lane line, it's predicting a path (as I would) from what the model learned in training. No side cameras needed.
Aug 1, 2026
comma reported gains after the world model was introduced, noticeably better reactivity around parked cars, they also called out longitudinal control in experimental mode as the biggest expected jump from this change.
Aug 1, 2026
MPC sat at the core of openpilot's driving decisions for years. comma killed it completely in 0.10 (Aug 2025) and replaced it with something called a World Model. Here's the actual difference between the two, and what @comma_ai says it bought them. 🧵
Jul 31, 2026
The model steering my Model Y, Space Lab 3, runs on Sunnypilot, a fork of comma's openpilot. Neither hands the car hand coded MPC rules for planning anymore. comma swapped that for a World Model that supervises the driving policy instead.
Jul 28, 2026
Total comma four engagement has passed 9,000 miles now. … My @comma_ai device engagement has come close to 93% since I installed it back in February. That's 93% less driving I have to do on the daily.
Jul 24, 2026
FSD v14 Lite has the best lane centering I’ve seen on this 2019 Model 3, very close to my comma four’s centering confidence. On the first drive at 0730, the low sun washed out the cameras, so FSD wouldn’t engage. The footage attached is my second drive, more details below 🧵
Jul 23, 2026
About 5 seconds into this highway to county backroad left turn, my Comma Four’s screen flashed a “Take control” warning: “Turn Exceeds Steering Limit.” It kept steering anyway, no intervention, and finished the turn in experimental mode. More on that alert below. 🧵
Jul 17, 2026
Lateral and longitudinal shipped first in 0.9.0. NoOP followed in 0.9.4 for prime and lite subscribers. It rendered the map, compressed it, and let the driving model predict the turn. 0.9.5 added a left/straight/right instruction vector on a new FastViT model.

comma ai banned cloud based AI company Anthropic this week. Worth noticing, their product never needed the cloud in the first place. The model driving my Model Y right now: → 58MB → 20Hz on a Snapdragon 845 → zero API calls, ever that’s ownership from the driver’s seat.
Jun 23, 2026
Neural networks don't give yes/no answers. They output probability; every prediction comes with a degree of certainty. Most systems hide that number from you completely. This one doesn't. 🧵

FrogPilot stacks extra settings and UI tweaks onto Openpilot. None of FrogPilot is ported to Comma 4 yet. FrogPilot users must choose: stay on the 3X or switch forks for the C4. My C4 + experimental mode, running clean on the Model Y. All FrogPilot users, are you buying the C4?

I suppose it depends on your definition of 'stop.' Lol, I filmed plenty of 'stops' today at around 3 miles per hour. Honestly, without looking at the speedometer, it felt like a real stop before it took off again.

Potholes or road debris? No problem with SunnyPilot! Tesla owners: Just gently grab the wheel, nudge around hazards, and Cooperative Steering (Beta) in MADS keeps you cruising, no disengagement! Paired with the beast that is the @comma_ai 4, it’s smoother and more capable than stock Autopilot ever dreamed of. Real driver-friendly autonomy. Zero subscriptions
Jun 11, 2026
Rainy backroad drive. Zero hands on the wheel. Timelapsed from 20+ minutes down to 26 seconds with my @comma_ai 4. … This is what actual ownership looks like. Absolute subscription freedom! 🇺🇸

That same cellphone works great on your @Tesla if you're trying to avoid the subscription!

I Just Updated My @comma_ai 4 to Openpilot V0.11.1 | Driver Monitoring Just Got Way Smarter! Comma dropped a nice quality-of-life update focused on making the Driver Monitoring system clearer and less annoying. The DM icon on the screen now turns orange the second it detects you’re getting distracted, before the loud alert goes off. It turns back green once you’re paying attention again. …

FSD on Hardware 3 does this and swerves into oncoming traffic due to skid marks and shadows from the trees.
May 26, 2026
One of my favorite things about the @comma_ai 4, I can pull it off my Tesla in under 30 seconds and move it to my truck, my girlfriends car, or whatever I’m driving that day. Need to hide it? Pop it in the glovebox and gone. Meanwhile, @Tesla FSD is married to whatever car you bought it for. Good luck moving that subscription to a different vehicle. One gives you actual ownership and flexibility. …

If you’re like me, you “improve” things until they explode ⛓️💥 Just spent a few days trying to add a Night Mode to my @comma_ai 4. Wrote absolute awful code (with AI) and successfully bricked it… twice. Thankfully, a few taps on the comma logo later and it’s factory fresh again. Open-source hardware. The “I can’t be trusted with nice things” safety net we all deserve 😂
May 19, 2026
Making progress towards a @comma_ai "Night mode" feature! (Honestly, I'm completely lost and have no idea what I'm doing.)
May 16, 2026
True, we're all very different that way haha and FSD AI3 is afraid of skid marks.

Roundabout time! Here's the difference between MADS mode and non-navigational Alpha longitudinal control in Sunnypilot (a fork of @comma_ai's Openpilot) There’s still some progress to be made, but hopefully Sunnypilot will release Navigate on Sunnypilot soon! Keep in mind Sunnypilot Longitudinal Control (Alpha)) is an opt-in experimental/alpha feature in Sunnypilot. It's a work in progress.

As Openpilot nears its steering limits, the glowing steering arc on your @comma_ai 4 grows bigger & brighter to warn you, a sleek new UI touch in 0.11. It visualizes torque/curvature demand vs. max available (for both torque & angle-control cars). Smooth on gentle curves, but it politely taps you to take over on tight ones.

@comma_ai FREE Open Source Model Showcase: Dark Souls Model V2 by Sunnypilot 🔥 This Off-Policy Model V2 brings a bold, confident driving style that feels like it’s been forged in fire: Aggressive yet controlled acceleration Tight, assertive following distances Sharp, decisive steering inputs (especially strong on trucks & heavier vehicles) Zero hesitation, perfect for drivers who want their car to match their energy. …

… while @comma_ai Four just sits there like: “Configure me entirely on the device. No app. No subscription. No account."
Apr 26, 2026
That being said, I see major improvement in Red light detection and overall smoothness with 0.11! 0.11 has been a huge win for me on the driving side, red light detection and vehicle creep is noticeably better and the overall ride feels way smoother.

.@comma_ai released OpenPilot v0.11 🔥, the first robotics agent fully trained in a learned simulation and made available to consumers. This release replaces traditional hand-coded simulators with a World Model that generates driving videos and plans, enabling the driving policy to be trained entirely on data produced by the AI simulation.
Apr 9, 2026
I've tried this once, today actually. The resolution is low. I'll try again with a different clip and see how that works. That said, the UI it generates is pretty boring to a normal person. It would be nice if it disappeared when openpilot is disengaged, it makes it hard for the average viewer to understand what's going on. It would also be nice to have the comma 4 UI

Just updated my @comma_ai 4 to openpilot 0.11 🔥 New driving model (trained in simulation), way better longitudinal control, and this sleek new comma four UI with the glowing steering arc is clean, and not as annoying as I first anticipated. It handles curves smoothly... until the turn exceeds the steering limit and politely asks you to take over. …

@comma_ai 4 device on a Tesla Model Y in experimental mode tackling city streets. … I love that I can avoid a subscription and own my open-source AI software.

Living in rural Wisconsin is peaceful and beautiful, but it comes with its quirks. People often ask why I drive so slowly, this dashcam clip from my Tesla Model Y perfectly explains it. Just when you think the deer will casually watch you pass... nope! How will FSD handle this?

I'm seriously impressed with @comma_ai Here's a longer clip of the comma 4 running in my 2020 Tesla Model Y, handling city street turns. What do y'all want to see next? I'm thinking experimental mode + heavy stop-and-go traffic, lights, and stop signs. Planning to test that later this week 👀 Drop your ideas below!

A surprise winter storm swept across Wisconsin's backroads last night. Check out this @comma_ai device confidently tackling the snowy hilltop road, steep edges and all. Honestly, I was a little nervous for a second there. Yet another reminder why I skip the FSD subscription.
Feb 18, 2026
Chilly and snowy evening out with the @comma_ai device tonight. Braved the city streets in full adverse winter weather mode. Reduced visibility, wet/icy spots, and openpilot nailed it impressively well! Comma kept things smooth and stress-free. Comma < FSD subscription
Feb 18, 2026
Curious how @comma_ai handles night driving with faint or missing lines? Spoiler: beautifully. Taking confident "FSD-style" turns here using "MADS" in sunnypilot, Comma steers while I control acceleration.
Feb 17, 2026
I've been running sunnypilot with the 2026 SC model on my @comma_ai device, and I'm blown away. Butter-smooth lane changes and confident tight cornering, even on unmarked city streets! No way I'm going back to an FSD subscription!
Feb 16, 2026
The #1 main reason I subscribed to Tesla FSD was to have lane assist on unmarked roads. As I live in a rural Wisconsin, Basic OpenPilot accomplishes this like a dream, without a subscription. Here are my first tests with the @comma_ai device.

I went "canyoning" or as my fellow Americans might say, rappelling. While gearing up for my first heroic leap into the abyss, I learned a harsh life lesson: always strip off anything that might end up as a permanent resident of the watery deep. I've got video proof, which I've graciously attached to this post. Watch closely, pre-jump, I'm rocking my stylish glasses like a nerdy action hero. Post-splash? Gone. …

A young man and woman (potentially three sheets to the wind) decided my front license plate was “it” in the world’s dumbest game of tag. Highway, comma four on the windshield.
FSD isn’t the moat people think. @Tesla may lead ADAS today … I get level 2 ADAS on hardware I own with no recurring fee. IMO we'll look back on ADAS subscriptions the way we look back on paying per text message.
